Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind

Cooper turned 10 months old today, and his favorite game right now is lying on the bed, peering over the edge and watching the dogs play and wrestle. Anything he can reach on the bed ends up on the floor, as he loves to slowly move whatever he can find – the TV remote, Raylene’s hair brush, whatever – to the edge of the bed .. and then slowly pushes it off to watch what happens. He’s learning what gravity is and how it works, and is absolutely amazed by it. His favorite part is when daddy reaches down and slowly brings the item up into his view again, as if magically reappearing in front of his eyes.  He squeals with delight when the item comes back, and then he grabs it only to drop it off the edge to repeat the magic trick. It’s incredible how much joy and fun I get out of the simplest moments with Cooper.  Kids are just incredible in their innocent wonderment and amazement by what we never even give a second thought about. As I played this game with Cooper last night, it made me think about how most people push things off “the edge” of their life, and never think about them again until someone or something brings it back into view. Here’s a great example. In our major 5 day training program, the 5 Day Experience,  that we do each year in Calgary (which just wrapped up on Sunday), one of the key concepts I try to emphasize is the power of regularly reviewing and writing your goals. When I first explain to people that one of the keys to success is regular review of your written goals, many people think it sounds kind of crazy to re-write your goals over and over each day. (actually, most people think it’s a novel concept to even HAVE written goals to begin with, not realizing that it is one of the fastest ways to get what you want in your life) However, I know from experience, as well as proven research and the evidence of the most successful people I know that this concept is critical. The reason it works is that, quite simply, by keeping the goals in your mind and reviewing them, you are regularly repeating them to your subconscious mind, and you begin to absorb and engrain them into your daily thinking process. Literally, you’re programming your mind with what it is you want to create in your life, and this triggers the Law of Attraction. If you’ve never tried writing your goals down and then reviewing and rewriting them every day, try it for 60 days and you’ll absolutely AMAZED at what happens in your life! Sadly, most people will never attempt this challenge, dismissing it as goofy or a waste of time.  Of course, this helps explain why the vast majority of people are unsuccessful financially, and will never achieve a fraction of their true potential. If you don’t already have written goals for yourself, just try it for 60 days.  Write them down.  Make them Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic and Time-Based.  (that is the SMART Goal Setting Process). Once you’ve written goals out that inspire and excite you, commit to reviewing them every day, and re-writing them.  It’s as simple as having a notebook, and each day you flip to a new page, and re-write the goals again. You can’t use a computer to do this.  There’s an inexplicable magic that occurs when you write out your goals with a pen or pencil on paper.  They have to be written out by hand. I promise you, if you’ve never done this and you give it a try, you’ll create more results in your life than you would have ever expected in such a short period of time! If you practice this habit and have created results, or you never have but you’re willing to try it and report your results, please post a comment here on my blog and let me know how it works for you! The bottom line is that in life, YOU GET WHAT YOU FOCUS ON.  If you keep important things in front of you, top of mind, you’ll move towards them. So don’t push important things “off the edge” .. keep them close to you and allow them to move you towards success!]]>

  1. Hi Greg,

I have been in the habit or years of writing my goals, but honestly I have fallen by the technological way side of writing them on paper. I shall do so and report back !!!

but in the past I have noticed even 5 year goals occurring within one year!!! but was the result because I wrote them down possibly??

we do all wonder about the ability our minds have which we have never even really had a chance to explore because science has not caught up yet, and what science says, we assume to be true! we don’t wonder that maybe science has millennium to really understand our real truths, (Science means search for truth)

Just a thought and a response to Greg. Thank you for your personal blog and for the great talk a few days ago on RRSP wealth building.

    Donal.
