Money Is NOT What You Think

Necker Island, the private island owned by Richard Branson.  I’m involved in a high-level mastermind and brainstorming group and along with Richard himself, we’re looking to create some BIG ideas and craft some devious plans to take over the world, or something like that.

Greetings from San Juan, Puerto Rico!
If there’s a great depression happening, someone forgot to tell all the people here on holidays that are playing and enjoying the luxury!  As you can see, it’s paradise here and the weather reminds me a lot of Cabarete in the Dominican Republic.  Beautiful views, warm winds and the amazing relaxed island pace that you can’t help but absorb. This trip is a huge opportunity for me, primarily because it gets me out of my regular day to day activities, and gives me thinking space.  Being in a group of major brains in the marketing and business development arenas doesn’t hurt to stimulate the creativity either! We’ve had our heads down for the last several weeks, busily preparing for our upcoming SimpleWealth Summit in Calgary, and I’m now getting a bit of a break from the action. I have not posted a lot on my blog lately, but you’ll see several posts over the next few days as I try to share some of the transformational and game-changing insights that I learn from an incredible group of peers and mentors. Anyway, I have been doing some thinking on the topic of “money”, and I’ve been developing what I think is a pretty interesting view of “what money is“.  One of the greatest challenges most people face is that they never really understand what money IS .. how it works .. or where it comes from. An interesting question I like to ask people these days is, “what is money?” Everyone has a different answer.  Most people, when they think of money, immediately think of a $20 bill in their wallet, or the coins or their dresser table, or maybe the balance they see when they log into their online banking. Money is NONE of those things. It’s hard for most people to get their head around the idea, but money is NOT really a physical thing.  The coins and bills that we carry around in our pockets and purses and not really money.  They are a symbol of money.  They are just a physical representation of money. So, then, what IS money? What do YOU think money is? I’d be interested in hearing what your view of money is.  If you were to describe money in 20 words or less, how would you describe it? I’ve already given you a hint of what money is NOT.  Before I share with you what I believe money really is, I want to hear what other people think. Please post a comment on my blog here, and TELL me what money is to you! I am working on a very interesting article that I think will help you get a new perspective on what money is, but in the meantime, please share your thoughts with me. Simply go here and answer the question in 20 words or less:  What Is Money To You? I’ll be posting again in the next day or two, as we get our mastermind meeting underway and I begin to gather all of the nuggets of powerful information and insight that I think you’ll love.

  1. Money is an exchange of energy. I have to ask myself, “What kind of energy am I putting into it?”

  2. “MONEY” is humanity’s currency. It gives us hope to improve our world and has the power to destroy it.

    Diane Leahy

  3. Money is the representative pausing place for the energy expended to gain a benefit and the utilization of that benefit. A change over, if you will.

  4. MONEY is like nature! It’s how you perceive it and how you take care of it which will protect you from it’s POWER

  5. Hi Greg,
Money is a (representative) means for opportunity. It is a communicative form of leverage.
I’m glad you’re getting some R&R and we wish you and your family the best. Thanks for all you do.

  6. Money is a perception of value, which conjures up emotions and feelings of a wide variety based upon the individual.

  7. Whatever I believe money is, it’s the truth and my life unfolds accordingly. I have to work on my beliefs. My 20 words.

I don’t know what money is really. I make up things to feel safer. I know that for me commitment comes first and money follows. I decide to do something and the funds come.

Now, I’m stuck working on my beliefs which is challenging. I am thinking bigger now Greg, as you suggested. I am planning 500 concerts next year, not a 20% more like all the other years, a 300% more.
I’m putting things in place to accomplish this but, it won’t bring me so much more money, maybe $80,000 more than my $56,000 salary. So I find myself still thinking small. I am afraid to think about a million dollars. I am judging myself, like if I were to do this, I’d deprive someone. ???

My affirmation on my wall is: money is abondant and available, and I receive extravagants amounts of it just by being myself. Maybe that will help?
Any more suggestions? Would love if you’d take a peak at my new site Greg: gottalovethatfrench.com

I don’t know if this counts like money but I now have an agent who has been working real hard for the last 3 months for little money, planning next year and I am getting 2 interns from Belgium who are so excited with my projects. They are free interns! So I guess this is a form of money? I think I have a block. I get a lot of free stuff, help, etc. but in my bank account, it is just what I need, not more. For example, if I want to take a class, I get the cash, my kid’s needs, I get the cash, some money to just sit there in case I’d have an idea? No. Retirement money? No. Can you explain this?

    1. I believe that pursuit of money is a flawed idea.

If you want to create more wealth and abundance in your life, the most IMPORTANT question you can ask yourself is:

How can I add more value to the world and to the people I serve?

And the follow up is, how can I serve more people?

Because the more VALUE and PEOPLE you serve, the more results you’ll get.

W = [Value You Deliver] x [# Of People You Serve]

      W = Wealth

If you read your post carefully, you’ll see one of your major challenges. You said that you’re afraid you’ll deprive someone if you become wealthy or have abundance.

As long as you hold that belief, frankly you’re DOOMED. You must disconnect that belief in your mind. Putting affirmations up is a great idea, but it does nothing if you look at it every day and your little voice says “that’s not true” or “B.S.”!

Read the post I wrote “I Am Money” and hopefully that will inspire you to think a little differently about money.

Remember, it’s not money that makes you wealthy, it’s providing value. The money is a by-product of value creation.

  8. Money is an economic abstract concept that allow people exchange goods, services or even values for other things that they need/ want.

  9. “Money – something that gives me the ability to do what I want, when I wish, in the manner I desire.”

It’s simply a medium of exchange to assist us in achieving our goals. — Lyle Latvala

  10. It is a piece of paper that is based on the confidence that we have in our governments. The higher the confidence the wider it is traded across the world.

    My 2 cents

  11. Money is the physical symbol of commercial worth in any given society, based on an exchange of energy for perceived value.

  12. Money is a symbol – a means to an end.

An airline ticket can symbolize the vacation (dream) of a lifetime.

  13. Money is a fiat currency or medium of exchange used to obtain what we want or need in the physical world.

  14. Money – a made up tool of exchange.
Most think of money in the “material” shape but in my opinion it is conceptual.

  15. The thing or action that “creates” money is the signature of a living human being. Nothing else creates “money” as we use it in our society. The signature authorizes the creation of the money by the bank and the signature line on a cheque is not actually a solid line but rather a micro print series of words saying “AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE” repeated to look like a line.
