Abundance Or Scarcity? What Your Future Holds

gave a presentation that absolutely blew me away. Now, I see a LOT of speakers — but this guy was different. Unlike any speaker I had ever heard, he made me think seriously about my future, and the future that my son Cooper is going to grow up to know. Have you ever been struck by a sense that your perspective has been entirely shifted in a moment? That’s what happened during this presentation. His name is Dr. Peter Diamandis, and he’s one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met. He recently gave a TED talk, and got a (rare) standing ovation — over 500,000 people have watched this presentation in the last couple of weeks alone. And that’s because it’s POWERFUL – and answers the question of whether the future is going to be better, or get worse.

Peter has been a key influencer on my outlook and belief that we have an incredibly bright future ahead – and judging from the response from my previous blog post (Brightness Of The Future), there are a lot of people who feel the same! This TED video is only 16 minutes long, but it gives you incredible insight into why it is that it seems like there’s so much “doom and gloom” in the media and in daily life. Peter reveals why there is incredibly good reason to be optimistic about our future, and some of the opportunities there are for those willing to have the courage and optimism to take them. I’m grateful for having met him and spent some time with his incredibly expansive thinking and inspriration. This video will help you wipe away a lot of the grey dust you feel from the constant barrage of bad news and negativity in the world. Please, watch this video and then post a comment with your thoughts. Be sure to answer this question: Is the world getting better, or is it getting worse?]]>

1. Hello, Greg,

How odd that you should have posted this TED Talk today, as I watched Peter Diamandis’ TED Talk yesterday and agree with you and empathize with everything he says.

A few years ago, I got rid of my TV, being tired of the constant negativity and banality of the news, which lays on the doom and gloom and saps any positivity. Yes, we will face challenges going forward, but we always have.

TED Talks are a wonderful creation and have become my “Bedtime Story”, watched on my iPad. Many of the presenters are so far ahead of most of us and offer us an inspiring glimpse of “What Is To Come” or “What Is Achievable”.

Last Christmas Day, I sent out Albert Cairo’s TED – “There are no scraps of Men” – to my family, as the true message of Christmas. If anyone reading this, has not seen it I would recommend watching it at http://blog.ted.com/2011/12/23/there-are-no-scraps-of-men-alberto-cairo-on-ted-com/.

As always, Greg – thank you for Simple Wealth, Trusted Authority and all of your other inspiring teachings.

My Trusted Authority Formula Competition entry should be with you today – my fingers are crossed.

Cheers,

Sue Ferreira

One of my favourite quotes is from the anthroplogist, Margaret Mead –

“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the World.
Indeed it is the only thing that ever has”.

One of the powers of the Web is its ability to bring together groups, who would not otherwise have met and to spread information and education to one and all, bringing about change for the betterment of us all.

Thanks for introducing us to this great speaker!

18. Hi, Greg,

Thanks again for helping us lift our heads from looking only at the ground,
We need a better sense of proportion about where we are in the world.

Really its fear itself thats constricting us as a global community right now.

I believe that those who will invest in new sustainable energy technologies
need not worry about their financial future or need to understand the stockmarket.

So thanks again for the leadership.

regards

22. Well, I have to confess that I am one of these people with a rather negative outlook (not totally pessimistic though). But not because I would think that mankind wouldn’t be smart enough to find technological solutions for the problems addressed in this talk.

But without being too much into conspiracy theories I am rather convinced that the solutions for e.g. energy crisis and global warming or public health exist already since some time but are suppressed massively by large companies which do make their money by preserving the status quo.
So we will probably see a real turn around on the energy market towards cleaner and more effective sources only when the last drop of oil was burned. And then it may be too late for a turnaround of the world climate.

And as health is concerned… let’s see what the FDA has to say about this tricorder. If it really would be a resource for readily available and maybe cheap health I am sure the pharmaceutical industry leveraging their eager subordinate, the FDA, will find a way to ban it and criminalize it’s inventors.

Re water scarcity, peoples’ access to clean and fresh water has been in government hands for ages. But we no live in times where privatization is in rapid progress. The scarcer water is the more money you can make with it. So I am quite curious how this Coca Cola project of supplying clean water in 200+ countries will develop and if I will hear much more about it in the future (I hope I will!).

So, to summarize, in my opinion solving the survival threatening problems of mankind is not so much a problem of lack of technology but much more a problem of ethics (defined as engaging in actions supporting the LONGTERM survival of oneselv, one’s fellow human beings and whole mankind).

23. Greg, awesome video, man. I like to joke that, yes the world is going to hell in a handbasket, but not for all of us. The truth is that the world’s problems, coupled with this revolution in technology, have spurred many people and private organizations to find their own solutions to problems.

Technology is unleashing the human spirit – our creativity, compassion and desire. Really great, inspiring video.

24. Hi Greg,

Thanks for the link. I suspect many folks confuse optimism with idealism. Most successful and pragmatic businesspeople I deal with have to have a optimistic sense of moving forward otherwise the grind beats them down.

That said, I find the comments on the YouTube site to be fascinating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BltRufe5kkI#! and quite an unvarnished reflection of what different people take away from this talk.

I agree with Klaus (below) re ethics; the connectivity of the internet seems to be creating seems to be a tidal shift towards an accepted level of behavior among businesses. It’s getting harder and harder to hide narrow self interest behavior.

25. Great video. He’s so right. Imagine all that is going to come out from 3 more billion people online. Amazing what the future holds.

26. “The most critical tool for solving Humanities Grand Challenges…. is the committed passionate human mind”. Peter Diamandis

Got to LOVE this!

27. Greg, a few years ago I began to seriously think about what this physical world needs, and I came up with two things: food, and energy. The sea has the potential to supply the first, and the sun the second. Some of what Peter says in this video speaks directly to my innermost soul; I’m deeply gratified to find out I’m not the only one who gets excited about these things. Thanx!

28. Its nice for a change to see someone speaking of hope and light for the future. I do feel there needs to be a critical mass of people to enable the scales to tip in favor of a new and better world. The majority of people are conditioned at a very deep level to focus and worry on the problems and challenges that face us. They are looking for others to do the job for them such as Peter in the video. It reminds me of the great quote from Margaret Mead… “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”.

29. Sorry to put a dampener on this video but someone needs to wake up and smell the coffee. He certainly sounds riveting but lacks real substance.

Facts and trivia belong on the back of a cereal box and mean nothing when man has already existed for over 6,000 years if you believe the adam and eve account or aeons if your cousin is an ape. Quite easy to forget what man is capable of doing to his neighbor. You don’t need to be a pessimist, watch the news or believe the hype to understand and see this…

The developments man has engineered and thought up are not solving all our genuine needs, not even our basic needs let alone problems, they are not making us happier, they are making the minority happier, including himself and the 500,000 standing ovation……

The world already has an abundance, that’s fact, even before we arrived, where ever you believe that is. The world doesn’t need to be complicated even more with toys/technology it needs one single thing that 99.9% of the global population think they understand but is actually lost in translation.

Remember the meaning and practical application of this word TED? – L.O.V.E….. It needs no batteries or wireless router it just needs global reciprocation dude.

The future is absolutely bright and even more brighter than TEDthinks. He’s only realizing it now. My 7 year old could get the same standing ovation with what he knows about the bright future.

TED’s zeal is misplaced but who’s hasn’t been, things could change for him, the penny may drop and if it does, he’ll realize man is just but a speck in the grand scheme of our existence, quite rightly so as history has proved man cannot rule man and satisfy the needs of every human born. Fact.

The planet is our playground it’s just teaming with school yard like bullies.
Not for long though. This message is not pessimistic, not driven by the media you’ve likely heard it before but ignored it.Why? Coz following it would mean 99.9% of the global population rethinking their definition of the word, remember the word? Yes Love…

30. Greg,
It is truly enriching to hear the voice of knowledge and wisdom cementing what I read on a daily basis and causing hope to spring eternal in many, many lives.

Thanks again Greg, I will share with my community. Cheers to Peter and TED talks

31. Bravo. You are so correct, the world is becoming more negative every day, especially the US. Most of our news and knowledge sources, including society itself, are based on negative thinking models.
I agree totally with you and Peter about the abundant future. But, this abundance will only be attained if each and every one of us, on an individual basis, becomes the most positive, forward thinking and abundant person we can be. What can we do individually to become happier, become more abundant and most importantly, who can we help?
I am lucky enough to have had a major crisis in my life that led me to stop thinking everything in my life was”never enough” I began, first out of necesssity, to look at what I DID have , not what I DIDN’T. This led me to abundance in the present moment and to understand I couldn’t have more abundance unlesss I was currently, in the present, in abundance.
None of the abundance you and Peter talk about can happen if we as individuals do not KNOW it will happen.

32. FANTASTIC…….I share the dream and will play my part to enable it….and..lest I say BUT….I find myself needing to play mr realistic here in that in terms of world power structure the trans national corporations are dominant players, purchasing patents and bending countries and culture to their own profit making ends…next are politicians, all to often power/ego lower grade humans in it for there own ends..not our…….but next comes us………the heartfull human who want the best for our species…that want to evolve our consciousness, our humanity and our culture to its highest values..Peter is such a man.

33. I get that progress must happen, I just wish the Solar Farms didn’t have to destroy my family’s legacy (Calif) as they waste so much money building the monstrosities. Also with the confirmation by PG&E that our electric bills will quadruple when the Farms are finished. Very disappointed.

34. Excellent article, yet viewers still get caught up in negatives about what was said in regards to engergy, water, etc, instead of listening to the overall message. The acceleration of progress over the past 200 years includes many things not mentioned here including changes in modes of transport, accessiblity of electricity, etc. So the point that I see from the article is that there are opportunities out there in many areas of life, and each of us can be a part of it or we can sit in the background and watch as it takes place, and then think about how lucky those involved in progress are, instead of recognizing that they took action. Thanks for sharing Greg.

35. Nice optimistic speech with cool words like “democratizing”.
For technology to be truly democratizing, it must be employed by individuals who previously had not been empowered to deliver their beneficial offerings to the public.
Most people merely consume the fruits of technology, which the minority produces.
So, is tech progress really democratizing at all? More accurate would probably be “re-centralizing.”
It is the primary interest of those in power to remain in power. Hence, mass-media selling negativity to the public with ease, as corroborated by Dr. Diamandis as he opened his speech. And now you can take it with you everywhere you go.
With this in mind, it is the duty of every well-intentioned, thinking person who identifies themselves with the top 20% of productive society to find ways to benefit mankind using whatever technology they find workable.
In my view, this is the simple way to wealth.
In fact, that’s what this blog is all about.
Thanks for sharing the vid, Greg.
Cheers, JL

36. I am an optimistic realist and I believe that our present or past experiences don´t have to be our future, we only need to learn from them. I am also convinced that we live in exraordinary times as a humanity, at the point of great changes. More and more people realize that heart is many times more powerful than brain and that much higher heart energetic vibrations of love, joy, peace and compassion are affecting many more people as opposed to low vibrations of hate, fear and greed.
So, yes I know that our future is much brighter than what shows on the surface now.
Few weeks ago I got about 3 hr. video from Mr. Diamandis and I watched it till early morning. His new book also looks interesting, I read first chapter and will buy it.
Thank you Greg for passing on good news.

37. Fantastic and refreshing! its very true we have all become so obsessed with negativity. I do not read the paper or watch TV anymore because quite frankly its all overwhelming. plus what benefit does it have on me or anyone. What is not so obvious is all the wonderfully inspiring stuff happening everywhere. its time to shift gears and open our eyes and hearts.

39. I am now higher in age and see this as the best time ever. This video really demonstrates the the why. Sure helps to reaffirm my feelings. Finding it very helpful to avoid watching “the news” and most of what is on TV.

40. it will get worse if you don’t heal the death urge that you learned from you family tradition.

when you do heal the death urge, you will have tremendous reserves of energy and creativity.

try it, if you dont like it , you can always kill yourself again.

41. Absolutely spectacular! Now if CNN would just work like my affirmations subliminal program and repeat, repeat, repeat positive stuff into the world, then this vision of the future would be here in a year or two… what crisis? Oh, you mean that problem we solved yesterday?
