Advice I Got From Dr. Stephen Covey

2008 MasterWealth Retreat took place in Banff, Alberta, with over 300 people in attendance, and they were there to hear an incredible line-up of speakers. The expectations were VERY high, but they certainly delivered! With the stunning Rocky Mountains as the backdrop, we had some of the world’s leading experts in their fields, each sharing cutting-edge strategies and knowledge with the enthusiastic group. Starting out the first morning was Dr. Robert Cialdini, author of “Influence”, one of the greatest business books ever written. He had the crowd captivated with his incredible knowledge on ‘why people do the things they do’, and how to ethically utilize influence tools to get what you want. Cooper, Marci & Raylene in BanffNext up, Marci Shimoff, best-selling author of “Happy For No Reason”, was a crowd favorite with her energetic presenation on the secrets of creating happiness. It was the first time I’ve met Marci, and she was truly an amazing person. She was incredibly kind and wonderful to work with — it’s not hard to see why she’s been so successful and is in demand as a speaker and trainer. <– Here she is with my wife Raylene, holding my son Cooper — who she fell in love with the moment she saw him. Friday also featured Michael Smorch, an incredible and fascinating money manager from the U.S. who provided stunning insight into the global economy, and helped equip those in attendance with a range of wisdom on the uncertainty in today’s markets. And wrapping up Friday was Paul Hoffman, an accomplished musician from L.A. who provided a fresh and unique view on doing what you love and following your passion. Greg & Dr. Stephen Covey in BanffDay 2 of the event got off to an incredible start — Dr. Stephen Covey, author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People“, kicked off the morning session, and had the entire audience mesmerized. It’s rare to have an opportunity to learn from a living legend like Dr. Covey, and this was a very special and powerful session. (In fact, Dr. Covey provided me some very valuable parenting advice, which I’ll mention below). Following Dr. Covey, we were treated to a 2-part workshop session with Les Hewitt, who provided the attendees a wealth of hands-on tools and knowledge to get more done in less time — something everyone can use! And then finally, to wrap up an incredible event, we finished with my good friend and mentor, Keith Cunningham, who was another crowd favorite. Keith finished the program on a great high, and the feedback we received from attendees was better than any event we’ve ever had. Prior to Dr. Covey’s address in the morning, I had the pleasure of having breakfast with him and asked him what the best advice was he could give me as a new father. I think he’s qualified to dispense such advice, since he has 9 children of his own, and is expecting his 50th grand child this week! When I asked him what his best advice was, he didn’t even think for a moment — he said, “unconditional love”. And then, he said, “Greg, give your son the gift of teaching him to the Character Ethic, and never let him adopt the Personality Ethic.” He went on to explain that children are harmed by being taught early in life that their success comes only in comparison to others. Rather than letting them get caught up in comparing grades, comparing clothes and comparing income .. teach my son to strive to be his best, to hold his values close, and only ever to compare himself against his own personal potential. To say that this opportunity to meet and learn from Dr. Covey, as well as all of the other world-class speakers, was incredible is an understatement. The entire event was humbling, and from what we heard, everyone had a great time. We’ve already got the planning for next year’s event underway, and it’s going to be spectacular!]]>
